At Misty Cashmere, we believe true luxury must also be responsible. That means producing knitwear in the most sustainable way possible for our conscientious customers - including ensuring that every trim we use is carefully considered, ethically sourced, and environmentally responsible.

From boiled wool zip trims to natural buttons and GOTS-certified organic cotton labels, our commitment to sustainability extends to every component of our garments.

Boiled Wool Zip Trims: Where Tradition Meets Innovation

The Art of Boiled Wool

Boiled wool - traditionally known as loden in Alpine regions - is a time-honoured textile developed to withstand extreme mountain conditions. This remarkable material is created by transforming loosely woven wool into a dense, durable, and naturally water-resistant fabric.

The process begins with wool fabric that retains its natural lanolin. Through controlled exposure to heat, moisture, and agitation - a technique known as fulling or felting - the fibres interlock, producing a fabric that is wind-resistant, breathable, and exceptionally hard-wearing.

Why We Use Boiled Wool on Our Zip Neck Jumpers

Boiled wool is ideally suited for use as a zip trim on men’s knitwear. It offers:

  • Natural resistance to wind and moisture
  • Durability without synthetic reinforcement
  • Breathability and flexibility that moves with knitwear
  • A rich texture and depth of colour

We use either navy or brown boiled wool trims, carefully selected to complement the colour palette of our sweaters. The material takes dye beautifully and adds both a tactile and visual contrast to the knitted fabric.

A More Sustainable Alternative to Synthetic Trims

From an environmental perspective, boiled wool offers clear advantages over synthetic alternatives:

  • Made primarily using water and mechanical action, avoiding chemical-heavy processing

  • Wool is renewable, biodegradable, and long-lasting

  • Many producers work with regenerative farming systems where sheep grazing supports soil health and carbon sequestration

Technically, boiled wool also performs exceptionally well with knitwear. Its natural elasticity allows it to stretch and recover without fraying, creating a seamless integration with the knitted structure of the garment.

Natural Buttons: Small Details with Big Impact

All buttons used on Misty Cashmere knitwear are made from natural, renewable materials, including corozo nut, coconut shell, and bamboo.

Corozo Nut Buttons (Vegetable Ivory)

Corozo nuts - often referred to as vegetable ivory - appearance and strength, corozo buttons have been used in fine garments for over a century.

Our corozo buttons are made by Courtney & Co Button Company, a UK-based specialist button manufacturer known for precision and quality.

The process involves:

  • Selecting mature, high-quality nuts

  • Ageing them for optimal density

  • Cutting, shaping, and finishing each button individually

  • Multiple stages of inspection for durability, colour fastness, and consistency

Courtney & Co sources corozo nuts through ethical cooperatives, ensuring fair wages, sustainable harvesting, and reforestation initiatives in South America.

Coconut Shell Buttons

Coconut shell buttons offer beautiful, natural variation, with tones ranging from deep brown to soft blonde. They are:

  • Extremely hard-wearing and crack-resistant

  • Naturally moisture-resistant due to inherent oils

  • Ideal for garments worn across changing weather conditions

Using coconut shells supports circular economy principles, transforming agricultural by-products into long-lasting garment components rather than waste.

Bamboo Buttons

Bamboo is one of the world’s most renewable natural resources. It grows rapidly without replanting and improves soil quality where cultivated.

Our bamboo buttons are sourced from suppliers committed to responsible harvesting and forest conservation. Because bamboo can be harvested without killing the plant, it offers an exceptionally low environmental impact while delivering a smooth, refined finish.

Organic Cotton Labels: Transparency from the Inside Out

Care labels may seem small, but they play an essential role in garment longevity, care, and sustainability communication.

Traditional care labels are typically made from synthetic materials and printed using chemical-based inks. By switching to GOTS-certified organic cotton labels, Misty Cashmere has reduced environmental impact while supporting organic farming systems.

Why Organic Cotton Matters

Organic cotton production:

  • Eliminates synthetic pesticides and fertilisers

  • Uses less water than conventional cotton

  • Promotes soil health and biodiversity

  • Creates safer working conditions for farmers

Processing organic cotton also avoids harsh treatments such as chlorine bleaching, further reducing chemical inputs.

Our organic cotton labels reinforce our brand values while giving customers confidence that sustainability is embedded throughout the garment - not added as an afterthought.

An Integrated Approach to Sustainable Luxury

Sustainability at Misty Cashmere is not about isolated choices - it is about complete transparency across the supply chain, from raw materials to finished garments.

By carefully selecting sustainable trims, we aim to:

  • Reduce environmental impact

  • Support ethical production and fair labour

  • Increase garment longevity

  • Build trust with informed, values-driven customers

Our trim choices reflect a belief that luxury and sustainability are not opposing forces, but complementary pillars of truly exceptional design.

As we continue to refine and improve our processes, Misty Cashmere remains committed to creating knitwear that respects nature, tradition, and positive change - without compromising on quality or style.
